- Refer to the production process that your group followed for the Paper Specs booklet. Learn from that process, modify and refine it.
- There must be identical copies, one for each of you and two for me.
(22 total for class 2016)
- The subject of your magazine is a class portfolio of your collective design works.
- It should have a name, identity, and unifying theme.
- It will be due the day Final Exams are scheduled for this class: Wednesday May 11th
For this last assignment you will function as a member of a design and production team where everyone will assume specific roles in the workflow of the design and production of this piece. You will need to determine who will take specific responsibility for the following roles. You should select leaders such as design editors and an overall project manager to keep everyone on project;
- DANTE: Editor / Project Manager (co-managers)—oversees the workflow for the entire project, sets goals, deadlines and coordinates the various individuals and groups
- JANA: Design Editor—oversees a consistent application of design principles and unity across the print layout and web site, works closely with the project manager
- KELLIE & DUSTIN: Production manager—primary responsibility is managing production workflow: setting the timeline, materials, equipment, paper
- Design print team (approximately 1/2 the class)
- PRAJI & SYNCLAIRE: Photographer—oversees standards for photography images, responsible for either taking or directing others with meeting agreed upon photo requirements
- JORDAN & BINAY: Copy Editor (co-editors)—proofreading and assuring that copy is correct, consistent, and accurate
- ROSE & KIRSTEN: Graphics Editor—oversees standards for graphics images, responsible for either creating or directing others in meeting agreed upon graphic image requirements; correct and consistent resolution, size, file format, image style, etc.
- Each class member must submit two layout design proposals to be considered for the overall look and layout of the pub.
- Each must submit a personal design statement/philosophy
- Each must submit an example image from a professional designer (not studio artist) who has influenced you + brief description and credit for this person. (an excellent resource for you to discover who has created major works of inspiring design is Communication Arts magazine. Copies of CA, as well as How and Print are located on the shelves of the design library in the GD studio).
- Your Individual pages also include a minimum of 3 examples of your own work with captions.
There must be a minimum of the following traditional magazine sections:
- Table of Contents/who you are
- Colophon/production notes
- General Introduction/class statement about design
- Create a visual Identity/personality for the magazine
- Name the magazine, create a visual identity/theme
- Individual and group photos
Group Goals are for a seamless production workflow.
It is very much your project to make decisions about and problem solve technical, design and production issues. You have all the knowledge at this point to achieve excellent design results. I serve as a consultant on this project, not as art director. You will collectively make decisions on how to solve this problem. Your challenge will be to work together as a team in an efficient and productive manner.
Group Goals are for dynamic and innovative design.
Layout and typography are the two main design components of this project. Since it is a multi-page project, the consistent treatment of common design elements from page to page helps to establish a sense of grouping and hierarchy and results in a unique rhythm throughout the publication. Make group decisions about how images type and space will be treated. Establish character, paragraph and object styles to aid you with this particular goal.
- Set a timeline for production. Backward map the project.
- Sketch out different layout options for you magazine including positioning and size of key elements, you can then select the most appropriate one to develop further
- Take time to experiment with design ideas before you start to produce
your final cover
- Maintain a consisted colour scheme
- Follow magazine conventions carefully to ensure that you achieve maximum marks
- Produce a dummy to plan the sequence and organization of the pages.
