Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is a “rule of thumb” or template guideline which can be applied to the process of composing visual images such as designs, films, paintings, and photographs. When you activate the grid on your smart phone you see two vertical and two horizontal lines which divide the viewing screen into thirds. This is an example where the grid helps you compose the image before you take it. The intersections of the lines are key locations for you to position major elements or objects within the overall compositional arrangement. You are not restricted to using this rule of thirds only with your camera, however. It is a helpful aid to visualizing and ultimately positioning objects within any composition (drawing, painting, photograph, graphic design, etc.)
